STRIVE FOR A SAFER DRIVE (S4SD)
We just won a $1000 grant from the Strive for a Safer Drive Association.
With the $1000, we are going to use it to promote safe driving! We had handed out bracelets, candy, and bump stickers to students! We want to get kids excited about safe driving by hosting fun and interesting events.
1) Minute to Win it Challenge.
2) MarioKart with Drunk Goggles
3) Art Contest
With the $1000, we are going to use it to promote safe driving! We had handed out bracelets, candy, and bump stickers to students! We want to get kids excited about safe driving by hosting fun and interesting events.
1) Minute to Win it Challenge.
- We created fun obstacle courses for participants who would be on a scooter.
- Participants will have to navigate through cones while on a scooter. The twist is that participants have to text on their phone or wear drunk goggles while trying not to hit any cones.
- There will be identical obstacle courses set up, so it is like a race between 2-4 participants!
2) MarioKart with Drunk Goggles
- Playing Mariokart but with drunk goggles.
- There will be 4 people on a round, and whoever wins gets a king size candy bar.
- We did this 2 days during lunch and 1 day after school!
- The results were so funny, but we learned so much about the affects and distortion caused by drinking.
3) Art Contest
- Students submitted art work that pertained to or represented driving. Each student also submitted a personal statement about what their piece meant and safe driving means.
- We wanted to get kids to use their creativity to show what driving is all about or how it should not be taken advantage of.
- Students were able to turn in paintings, pictures, and drawings! We love getting inspirational and creative.
- We hung up the finished artwork around the school.
covenant HOUSE speaker
From the Covenant house, one of the workers talked to us about the lives of teens and kids having to stay there. We talked about what its like for teens there, how they get jobs, how they find out what they want to do with their lives to get them on their feet. The speaker also discussed how many people living there are taught how to take care of themselves and how to adapt to harder schedules because many of them were homeless, and did not have schedules taken up by jobs, sports, or other activities.
Baldwin Center
At the Baldwin center, we helped organize clothes, toys, and other items for families in need. Our members all worked in specific rooms helping to organize and sort which items belonged where, and we cleaned the rooms to make them presentable for people to come in. During these hours, we offered a big hand to the Center as they were preparing to give away their supply of clothes, toys, and other items, for families to take if they were needed.
Meal on wheels
For meals on wheels, our club bought and decorated paper bags in which the organization uses to deliver food to those who need it. We used markers, crayons, and colored pencils to decorate the bags in hopes of bringing smiles to the faces of those in need. Each of the bags we decorated were all unique as many of our members dedicated their time and creativity to make others happy.
Apple picking for the homeless
During this activity, we went to Blake's apple Orchard to pick apples. We also partnered up with Forgotten Harvest and donated all the apples to hungry families. We learned about how poverty is so prevalent throughout Michigan, and we wanted to do everything we can to help those families out.
Trash clean ups
We conducted a few trash pick ups around our school to promote a cleaner environment for the student body. These events took place in the spring, when we went around in groups picking up trash all around the school. We went behind the football field and around the bleachers, which we filled with layers of trash. We picked up until it was spotless. We talked to the principals about making announcements during football games to prevent people from littering and throwing their trash behind the bleachers. We want to make our school grounds the best it can be for the students and teachers!
no one eats alone
During all lunch hours, our club members will sit with those who are alone. We do this to make students feel less alone, and to create a friendlier environment within our school. By sitting with people who are alone at lunch, we make new friends and help others become
distracted driversPromoting safe driving with a series of events, like playing Mario kart with drunk goggles and an art contest! We also had a speaker come in to talk to each grade about the dangers of distracted driving. We had an assembly dedicated to teaching students how to be safe on the roads.
MICHIGAN HUMANE SOCIETY |
Decorating 12x12 boxes with colored paper and pipe cleaners to donate to the Michigan Humane society. The boxes were made for the cats to have somewhere to sleep. We wanted to also help animals in our community. Especially with the cold temperatures, everyone deserves somewhere warm to sleep.
